It also claims to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, despite being designed to improve health, it is also a diet marketed for weight loss and has become very popular among several celebrities, making it quite the fad.

What is The Zone Diet exactly? It is a diet – or rather, a lifestyle – that is based on Sear’s philosophy that food can affect the body’s hormonal response, which can lead to changes in the body’s insulin production. The diet has been built on a percentage system. According to Sears, following a food plan that has a balanced percentage of 40% carbohydrates, 30% fat, and 30% protein, this will produce the best combination for the body’s natural genetic programming, allowing it to go into an efficient metabolic state, or “The Zone”. Thus, the focus of this diet isn’t to cut calories necessarily, but to revamp the body’s metabolism using the 40-30-30 ratio.

Dieters are required to follow a strict eating schedule that consists of three meals and two snacks daily. A small amount of lean protein is to be consumed five times day (during meals and snacks). In addition, the diet recommends carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans, as well as unsaturated fats like olive oil, avocados, and nuts. Moderate daily exercise is also suggested. Sears is the author of several books, including, “Enter The Zone”, which provides dieters with information and guidelines to help them follow the lifestyle. What are the drawbacks?
