The Cabbage Soup Diet is a popular fad diet that involves pretty much what the name of the diet implies – eating cabbage soup. This low calorie, regimented food diet focuses on providing the dieter with a list of foods they can eat for each day. There are no exercise guidelines or any specific dietary philosophies that the dieter is expected to follow. Essentially, follow the daily eating instructions and you’ll lose weight.

How Does the Cabbage Soup Diet Work?

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7-day diet plan. During each of the seven days, dieters are instructed to eat cabbage soup and usually some other specific type of food. For instance, a 7-day Cabbage Soup diet plan might look like this:

– Day 1: Cabbage soup and all of the fruit you want to eat (excluding bananas)
– Day 2: Cabbage soup and all of the raw/cooked vegetables you want
– Day 3: Cabbage soup and all of the vegetables and fruits you want (excluding bananas and potatoes)
– Day 4: Cabbage soup and unlimited skim milk and no more than 8 bananas
– Day 5: Cabbage soup and up to 6 tomatoes and no more than 20 ounces of skinless chicken, fish, and/or beef
– Day 6: Cabbage soup and unlimited vegetables, fish, skinless chicken and/or beef
– Day 7: Cabbage soup and vegetables, unsweetened fruit and brown rice (excludes potatoes)

The foods listed for each day can be eaten for all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and snacks.

Note: There is more than one variation of the Cabbage Soup Diet. Although the cabbage soup element doesn’t change, the other foods that accompany the soup may differ depending on the variation you are following. In addition, some variations recommend dieters drink up to 8 glasses of water per day and take a daily multivitamin along with the 7-day plan, while others instruct to eat only cabbage soup with no extra foods.

What Can Be Expected?

The Cabbage Soup Diet can lead to quick and temporary weight loss, due to the fact that it is low in calories, low in fat, and high in fiber. It is a fast way to drop a few pounds in a week.  However, it is not a long-term diet plan. It is primarily used by those who are looking to lose weight quickly before a special event or occasion. Those who follow it strictly, can lose up to 10 pounds in a week.

What are the benefits? 

– This diet can cause fast weight loss.
– Dieters can eat as much as they want of certain foods, so they don’t have to feel hungry.
– There is more than one variation, so you have more than one option.

What are the drawbacks?

– The Cabbage Soup Diet plan is an incomplete and unbalanced diet and could potentially be dangerous to a person’s health.
– No health expert endorses this diet and it is not known who created it. There is no “official” Cabbage Soup Diet.
– This diet does not promote any form of exercise.
– It is not recommended for long-term use.
– Reported negative side effects of this diet include weakness, dizziness, and concentration difficulties.

What it all comes down to is the Cabbage Soup Diet is not a safe or practical way to lose weight. While it is possible to lose weight quickly on this diet, most of it is water weight, not fat. This diet basically throws your body into starvation mode. Therefore, once you go off it, you will gain back all of the weight you lost within a short time even if you continue to diet.

Understand the Difference Between Water Weight and Fat

Healthful, practical and effective long-term weight loss is achieved through fat loss and not the loss of water weight. The body naturally gains and loses water depending on certain factors. For instance, you may retain excess water (stored in the tissue or between blood vessels) from:

– Consuming high amounts of sodium or carbohydrates
– Dehydration
– Hormones
– Certain medications
– The weather

Most people can regulate the amount of water their body retains by making certain dietary and lifestyle changes. Detoxes, cleanses or diets like the Cabbage Soup Diet are completely unnecessary and will work against your efforts.

In terms fat loss, generally speaking, a person must burn 3,000 to 3,500 more calories than they consume to lose one pound of fat on average. Losing this pound of fat can be accomplish by consuming less food, exercising more or, ideally, by combining the two. Typically, one pound of weight loss per week is considered to be a safe and achievable goal for most people.

Therefore, it is highly recommended that if you are serious about losing actual fat, it is best to follow a weight management program that requires you to make sensible dietary and exercise changes that are a practical fit and achievable for your lifestyle. The cabbage soup diet is a dangerous road to take and isn’t one that will lead to lasting success.
